Launched in August 1999 to mark Pfizer
Inc.'s 150th Anniversary and endorsed by the Ministry of Health, the
Pfizer Care-A-Van has become a friendly and familiar sight on Malaysia's
roads as it crisscrosses the country providing free health screening
and health education.
Care-A-Van team leaders Patricia Soepadmo and Tan Kwee Lan are both
trained and experienced nursing sisters. Assisted by volunteers, they
visit communities throughout Malaysia, with a particular emphasis
on the less privileged people in rural and semi-urban areas. Their
goal is to improve the standard of health among Malaysians everywhere
and to help them understand that regular health screening is important,
as prevention is better than a cure.
Pfizer Malaysia is the first and only pharmaceutical company in Malaysia
to have ventured into this community health service on such a large
scale. Pfizer spends approximately RM300,000 annually on this initiative.
Since its launching, the Pfizer Care-A-Van has visited over 200 locations
and screened more than 80,000 patients nationwide.
