  Cardiovascular

According to the World Health Organisation, cardiovascular diseases are the most common cause of death worldwide.

The two main cardiovascular problems are hypertension and coronary heart disease.

Hypertension

A person is said to suffer from hypertension if their blood pressure is persistently high. If left untreated, hypertension increases the risk of stroke, heart failure and kidney failure. The risk of these conditions is even higher if a patient is obese, has diabetes or has a high level of blood cholesterol.

Hypertension is caused by a number of factors, including:
  • Stress
  • Poor diet
  • Lack of exercise

Coronary Heart Disease

Coronary heart disease is caused by a narrowing or hardening of the arteries in the heart. It leads to heart attacks and angina, and it can occur in patients as young as 35.

A major cause of coronary heart disease is high blood cholesterol. Cholesterol settles as fatty deposits on the walls of arteries, narrowing them.

Other causes of coronary heart disease:
  • Smoking
  • High blood pressure
  • Obesity
  • Stress
  • Diabetes
  • Drug abuse
